Crews from the Arlington Fire District were dispatched to a Seitz Terrace home at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, where there was a report of smoke coming from the structure.

Fire officials said that firefighters were at the scene within minutes and made entry into the home that was filled with smoke. The residence was searched and found to be unoccupied.

The investigation into the fire found that the blaze originated from a kitchen in a basement apartment in the home. A tenant living there was able to evacuate, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Arlington Fire Chief William Steenbergh said the fire took approximately 15 minutes to extinguish and the home was then ventilated. No firefighters were injured battling the blaze, but a cat died during the fire.

The Arlington Fire District was assisted by the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, Mobile Life Support Services, Roosevelt Fire District and Pleasant Valley Fire Department.
